Mia Mask

Mia Mask is Professor of Film on the Mary Riepma Ross '32 Chair at Vassar College. She specializes in African American cinema, documentary history, and feminist film theory. Her acclaimed book 'Black Rodeo: A History of the African American Western' examines Black westerns from the 1950s to present, challenging traditional genre narratives.

Professor Mask curates film retrospectives for institutions including the British Film Institute and Academy Museum, focusing on underrepresented voices in cinema. Her research addresses racial representation in Hollywood, the politics of film genres, and the work of directors like Spike Lee and Ava DuVernay. She teaches courses on African American cinema and authorships studies.
