Mette Brekke is a Professor and Head of the Department of General Practice at the University of Oslo. A specialist in general practice/family medicine with clinical experience from 1981-2020, she holds a PhD from the University of Oslo Faculty of Medicine. Her research focuses on clinical aspects of general practice including consultation dynamics, communication patterns, risk assessment, drug treatments, acupuncture effectiveness, and social health inequalities.
Her research encompasses clinical decision-making in cancer diagnosis, management of substance abuse cases, and therapeutic communication in primary care settings. Current investigations examine diagnostic uncertainty in point-of-care ultrasound applications and prescribing practices for elderly patients.
Publications show strong focus on clinical decision-making processes, with recent articles exploring diagnostic challenges in oncology and mental health identification in primary care. Research employs qualitative methodologies including focus groups and interview studies alongside large cohort analyses.
