Merel van Gogh is a postdoctoral researcher at UMC Utrecht, affiliated with the Infection & Immunity strategic program. She holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Biomedical Sciences and Cancer, Stem Cells & Developmental Biology from Utrecht University, followed by a PhD in Cancer Biology from Switzerland.

Her research explores the interplay between cancer and the microbiota, particularly focusing on intestinal microbiota influences during immunotherapy. She investigates how immunomodulatory bacteria affect response rates and adverse events in immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy for cancer patients.
Recent work includes studies on Fusobacterium nucleatum’s role in upregulating PD-L1 in colorectal cancer and methodological advances in IgA-SEQ for metagenomic analysis of IgA-coated bacteria.
