About
Meredith L. Rowe is the Saul Zaentz Professor of Early Learning and Development at Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). Her research focuses on understanding how parent and family factors influence children’s language, literacy, and cognitive development, with a particular emphasis on interventions for caregivers. She holds an Ed.D. from HGSE (2003) and has held prior positions at the University of Maryland (2009–2014) and postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Chicago.
Rowe’s work addresses disparities in early childhood development, including socioeconomic and cultural influences. Her research explores topics such as gesture’s role in language acquisition, math talk in parent-child interactions, and the effects of digital media on language development. Funding sources include the NIH, NSF, and private foundations.
Her lab investigates environmental factors shaping child language, with studies in cross-cultural contexts (e.g., South Korea, China) and neurodiverse populations (e.g., autistic mothers). Recent projects include interventions using apps to enhance parent-child conversations and analyzing gesture’s neurophysiological impacts on vocabulary growth.
Rowe’s contributions bridge theory and practice, aiming to inform educational policies and caregiver strategies. She emphasizes the importance of interactive, linguistically rich environments for children’s holistic development.
