Dr. Mercedes Tasende is Professor of Spanish at Western Michigan University and Director of the Heredia, Costa Rica study abroad program. A specialist in early 20th century Spanish literature, her scholarship examines intertextual relationships in works by Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Miguel de Unamuno, Ramón Gómez de la Serna, and Manuel Rivas.
Current research investigates Spanish Civil War narratives. She received the 2013 Global Engagement Award for international program leadership.
