Merav Shohet is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Boston University. Her research focuses on intersections of culture, health, and social inequality with particular expertise in Southeast Asia and medical anthropology. She holds a PhD from UCLA.
Education: PhD in Anthropology from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Research interests include mental health narratives in Vietnam, race-based algorithms in healthcare, aging in communal societies, and ethnographic methodologies. She has conducted extensive fieldwork analyzing silence and sacrifice in Vietnamese family structures and colonial-era mental health systems.
Her recent work critiques racialized clinical decision-making frameworks and explores how marginalized patients navigate healthcare inequities. She has published widely on topics ranging from anorexia narration to stigma syndemics in chronic illness.
