About
Melissa W. Wright is a Professor of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Geography at Pennsylvania State University, holding the Ruby S. and E. Willard Miller Endowed Professorship. She is affiliated with the Rock Ethics Institute as a co-funded faculty member. Her research focuses on social justice movements in Mexico, the Mexico-U.S. borderlands, and the southern Americas, with an emphasis on critical race, ecological, and indigenous movements. She examines how these movements combat anti-immigrant policies, extractive economies, and racist governance systems through 'border thinking' and solidarity frameworks.
Her work addresses feminicidio, state terror, labor exploitation, and ecological stewardship, advocating for the intersection of social justice and environmental well-being. Current research explores how decolonial and queer perspectives shape activism in border regions. She actively recruits graduate students interested in critical race studies, feminist/queer ecologies, and migration-related activism.
Dr. Wright’s interdisciplinary approach integrates feminist, critical race, and political economic theories. She prioritizes solidarity with marginalized communities, particularly women-identified and feminized groups globally.
