Dr Melissa Haines is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and specialist registrar in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology at University Hospitals of Leicester, affiliated with the University of Leicester's Department of Genetics and Genome Biology. She holds an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge (2005) and a PhD in Microbiology (2009) focused on genomic islands in E. coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa pathogenicity.
Her research focuses on developing phage therapy cocktails against antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, particularly ESBL clinical isolates of E. coli and Klebsiella. After completing her PhD, she worked in industry as a technical support advisor before commencing medical training at Warwick University in 2010. She became an NHS doctor in 2014 and secured an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship at Leicester in 2016 under Professor Martha Clokie.
