Melchior Jakubowski

Melchior Jakubowski is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Historical Atlas Department of the Institute of History, Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in Warsaw. He completed his PhD in History at the University of Warsaw in 2020 under the supervision of Dariusz Kołodziejczyk. His research focuses on historical geography, landscape history, and religious practices in Eastern Europe during the early modern period.

His work examines how spatial dimensions influenced religious practice in multi-confessional environments, how landscape shaped historical developments, and how religious and ethnic identities interacted in borderland regions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He has conducted extensive research on Uniate (Greek Catholic) architecture, the introduction of new crops like potatoes in Eastern Europe, and the formation of multi-religious urban topographies under different imperial regimes.

His recent work analyzes how spatial constraints affected religious practice, how architectural patronage influenced church construction, and how ethnic and religious identities intertwined in multi-confessional societies.
