About
Melanie Jackson is a Lecturer in Fine Art at the School of Art, Design and Architecture, part of the University of Plymouth. Her practice focuses on non-fiction storytelling through assemblages of sculpture, writing, and moving image, exploring the sensorial and political qualities of materials within bio-techno-capital networks. She interrogates themes of excess, absurdity, and the interplay between science, myth, and socio-political commentary.
Her research investigates the bio-economy and its representations, often collaborating with scientists, technologists, and manufacturers to create interdisciplinary projects. Notable works include Spekyng Rybawdy (2022), examining medieval imagery and dissent, and Deeper in the Pyramid (co-authored with Esther Leslie), which explores milk as a bio-economic medium. These projects have been exhibited at institutions like Grand Union, Wellcome Trust, and Haus der Kulturen der Welt.
Teaching roles span institutions including the Royal College of Art, Slade School of Fine Art (UCL), and international universities. She has delivered talks globally, from the British Museum to venues in Hong Kong and Sydney.
