Mekhail Anwar is an Associate Professor in Residence at the University of California, Berkeley (EECS Department) and the University of California, San Francisco (Radiation Oncology Department). His research focuses on developing microfabricated sensors and electronic systems for precision cancer therapy, including implantable imagers, molecular sensors, and therapeutic radiation detection tools. His work bridges electrical engineering, biomedical systems, and oncology to enable real-time monitoring and targeted treatment.
His research interests include integrated circuits, biosystems engineering, and MEMS technologies. He leads the Anwar Lab, collaborating with clinical teams to translate innovations into clinical tools, such as miniature imagers and wireless fluorescence sensors for tumor detection and radiotherapy guidance.
Recent work emphasizes miniaturized photon spectrometers and closed-loop dosimetry systems, advancing precision medicine. Dr. Anwar’s NIH New Innovator Award supports his implantable imager research.
Current lab activities involve preparing several platforms for clinical trials and training postdocs/students in multidisciplinary engineering and oncology. Funding sources include NSF, DOD, NIH, and philanthropy.
