About
Meike Bleeksma is a doctoral student in the joint KI-KTH doctoral program for Medical Technology at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Karolinska Institute. She is supervised by Prof. Frank Niklaus and Prof. Anna Herland, contributing to research in tissue engineering, biofabrication, and neuroscience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Biomedicine from Karolinska Institute
- Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from ETH Zurich
Her work includes internships in the Molly Stevens group (KI), Stricker Lab for Epigenetic Engineering (LMU Munich), David Lane Lab (KI), Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication Lab (ETH Zurich), Macromolecular Engineering Lab (ETH Zurich), and Mooney Lab for Cell and Tissue Engineering (Harvard University). These experiences shaped her strong interests in tissue engineering, biofabrication, organ-on-a-chip systems, and neuroscience.
She develops in vitro models of the neuromuscular junction using biomaterial patterning (cavitation molding), vascularization, and iPSC differentiation protocols. Her projects also involve collaborations with Karolinska University Hospital, supported by KTH and Region Stockholm's Health, Medicine, and Technology (HMT) initiative, focusing on localized drug delivery via 3D printing and polymer chemistry for diabetes treatment advancements.
