Mechthild Prinz is a Professor in the Science Department and Director of the Master of Science in Forensic Science Program at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (CUNY). With over 30 years of experience, she specializes in forensic DNA analysis, having worked as a casework analyst and laboratory director in Germany and New York City. Her research focuses on optimizing DNA recovery and interpretation from contact traces, integrating DNA and latent print analysis, and studying individual DNA shedding variability.
Educated at the University of Ulm (Ph.D., Human Biology, 1991) and the University of Cologne (M.S., Biology, 1985), she has contributed extensively to forensic science through advancements in Y-chromosome testing, touch DNA methodologies, and interdisciplinary approaches combining DNA and protein analysis. She actively promotes best practices in forensic science through affiliations with organizations like the International Society for Forensic Genetics and the American Association of Forensic Scientists (as a Fellow).
Her scholarly work addresses cutting-edge topics such as non-destructive DNA recovery from documents, protein identification on cartridges, and mass spectrometry for body fluid identification. Current projects aim to standardize DNA analysis workflows and enhance forensic evidence reliability.
