About
Mebarek ALOUANI is a full Professor at the Institut de Physique et Chimie des Matériaux de Strasbourg (IPCMS), University of Strasbourg, where he leads the research group "Magnetic Objects on the NanoScale" (DMONS). His work bridges fundamental condensed-matter theory and cutting-edge experimental investigations in spintronics and molecular magnetism.
Research Interests: Professor Alouani’s research spectrum encompasses
- Spintronics at the nanoscale
- Molecular magnetism and spin-crossover phenomena
- Organic–inorganic spinterfaces
- Density-functional theory and many-body electronic structure
- X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD)
- Magnetic tunnel junctions and MgO-based barriers
- Quantum transport and energy harvesting via spin caloritronics
Across more than 40 high-impact publications since 2015 alone, a clear trend emerges: from atomistic ab-initio predictions toward room-temperature functional devices. His team repeatedly demonstrates how subtle interface chemistry—oxygen vacancies, fluorination, molecular dimerization—can be harnessed to control spin polarization and switching behavior with high fidelity.
Laboratory & Collaborations: Operating within IPCMS (a CNRS-University mixed unit), DMONS hosts state-of-the-art UHV surface-science tools and synchrotron beamlines. The group maintains tight collaborations with international partners such as the Max Planck Institute (Halle), the University of Basel, and SOLEIL synchrotron, fostering an interdisciplinary environment where theory and experiment converge.
