Mayson Sousa is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Respiratory Therapy at the College of Rehabilitation Sciences, University of Manitoba – Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. His work bridges basic science and clinical practice to improve respiratory care for critically ill patients.
His primary research areas include:
- Mechanical ventilation optimization
- Ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI)
- Patient-ventilator interaction
- Ventilator-induced diaphragm dysfunction (VIDD)
- Advanced respiratory monitoring using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) and esophageal pressure measurements
He also contributes significantly to health professionals' education and telehealth, with a strong emphasis on equity, diversity, and inclusion in healthcare delivery.
Dr. Sousa received his PhD in Pneumology from the University of São Paulo and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Critical Care and Translational Medicine at the University of Toronto (2021–2023). He previously earned a BSc in Physical Therapy from the State University of Piauí, Brazil, and completed a clinical fellowship in cardiopulmonary physical therapy at the Heart Institute, University of São Paulo.
His research has been recognized with the MECOR Graduate Scholarship Award from the American Thoracic Society in both 2018 and 2019.
Dr. Sousa is actively mentoring graduate students and is currently accepting both Master’s and PhD candidates. He has contributed to the development of online training programs for healthcare workers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, demonstrating his commitment to innovative and accessible medical education.
