Maya Stiller

Maya Stiller is an Associate Professor of Korean Art and Visual Culture at the University of Kansas, with a joint appointment as Guest Professor ('Gender in Manuscript Cultures') at the University of Hamburg. Her research focuses on Buddhist art, gender studies, and Korean visual culture. She holds a Ph.D. in Asian Languages & Cultures from UCLA (2014) and a Ph.D. in East Asian Art History from Freie Universität Berlin (2008).

Research interests include premodern Korean Buddhist art, pilgrimage practices, and digital humanities. Notable works include Carving Status at Kŭmgangsan (2020), winner of the 2021 Patricia Buckley Ebrey Prize, and Autographic Atlas of Korea, a digital exploration of graffiti sites. Awards include the ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowship (2016–18) and grants from the Korea Foundation and Research Institute of Korean Studies. She directs undergraduate studies in Art History and teaches courses on Korean ceramics, Buddhist art economies, and digital humanities.
