About
May Arna Godaker Risberg is a Professor in the Department of Sports Medicine at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. Her research focuses on knee and hip osteoarthritis, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, and the efficacy of exercise therapy versus surgical interventions. She leads and contributes to large-scale clinical trials, including the Delaware-Oslo ACL Cohort Study and the AktivA Quality Register, with an emphasis on long-term patient outcomes and cost-effectiveness of treatments.
Her work spans systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and cohort studies examining risk factors for osteoarthritis, functional recovery after ACL reconstruction, and standardized outcome measures for musculoskeletal injuries. She collaborates internationally on consensus frameworks for hip-related pain management and OA prevention post-knee injury.
Recent publications highlight her expertise in comparing anatomic surgical techniques, evaluating prehabilitation programs, and establishing patient acceptable symptom thresholds for recovery. Her research integrates biomechanical assessment, clinical decision-making, and interdisciplinary approaches to improve musculoskeletal care.
