Dr. Max Nelson is an Associate Professor of Greek and Roman Studies in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Windsor, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. He has been teaching at his alma mater since 2001 after completing his academic journey that began with a BA in Classical Civilization at Windsor, followed by an MA at the University of Ottawa and a PhD at the University of British Columbia with a Killam Fellowship. He also completed an SSHRC postdoctorate at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Nelson's research focuses on ancient social history, particularly the history of pleasure including food, drink, sex, and games. His expertise spans multiple areas of classical studies as evidenced by his diverse publications on topics ranging from beer history to gladiatorial shows, magical practices, board games, and ancient sexuality. His groundbreaking book The Barbarian's Beverage: A History of Beer in Ancient Europe (Routledge, 2005) established him as a leading scholar in the history of beer.
His recent scholarly output shows a continued exploration of the cultural dimensions of ancient life, with publications examining everything from the meaning of 666 in Revelation to ancient board games and insulting gestures. His work often bridges academic research with public interest, as evidenced by numerous media appearances discussing topics like the ancient origins of the middle finger gesture and connections between ancient Greek games and modern video gaming.
