Mauro Nobili

Mauro Nobili is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He holds concurrent appointments in the Program in Medieval Studies, European Union Center, Center for South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Center for African Studies. His research focuses on pre-colonial and early-colonial West Africa, particularly the political and intellectual history of Muslim societies. Nobili has conducted extensive archival research in Mali, Senegal, Nigeria, and Europe, contributing to publications in journals like History in Africa and Journal of African History.

His landmark book Sultan, Caliph, and the Renewer of the Faith (2020) examines the Caliphate of Ḥamdallāhi and the historiographical manipulation of the Tārīkh al-fattāsh. Current projects include a NEH-funded scholarly edition of Timbuktu chronicles and a microhistory of 19th-century imperial encounters. Nobili has received numerous awards, including the Conrad Humanities Scholar distinction and multiple teaching excellence recognitions.

Teaching responsibilities include courses on African history, Islamic cultures, and historical interpretation. His grants include funding for cultural preservation initiatives and collaborative research on Arabic manuscripts in Mali. Nobili actively participates in editorial roles, such as for Islamic Africa, and frequently presents at international conferences on West African history and manuscript studies.
