About
Mattias Tydén is a Senior Lecturer at Stockholm University's Department of History, where he received his doctorate in 2002. He previously served as an associate professor at Uppsala University's Hugo Valentin Center (formerly the Center for Multiethnic Research) and has been a researcher at the Institute for Futures Studies in Stockholm and Linköping University's Department of History.
His research focuses on key aspects of Swedish modern history including:
- Racism as an idea and policy, particularly examining eugenics and sterilization programs
- Evolution of the welfare state and its early challenges
- Migrant and refugee issues in historical perspective
- Sweden's response to the Holocaust
- Post-war international aid development
His most recent major publication, En svindlande uppgift. Sverige och biståndet 1945-1975 (2021), explores Sweden's role in international development assistance during the formative post-war decades, co-authored with Annika Berg and Urban Lundberg.
