Prof. Mattias Kumm holds a Research Professorship in Global Constitutionalism at the WZB Social Science Research Center Berlin and a joint appointment as Research Professor for 'Rule of Law in the Age of Globalization' at Humboldt University of Berlin's Faculty of Law. He has also held positions at New York University School of Law since 2000, including as the Inge Rennert Professor of Law. His work focuses on global constitutionalism, democracy, human rights, rule of law, and market regulation.
Education includes an SJD from Harvard Law School (dissertation on supranational law enforcement) and an LL.M. from Harvard. He has been a visiting professor at institutions like Yale Law School, the European University Institute, and the National University of Singapore.
Research emphasizes the theoretical foundations of constitutionalism, the role of global legal frameworks, and the challenges posed by populism and authoritarianism. His recent projects include analyzing the liberal script's evolution and the implications of the Ukraine war for international legal order.
Teaching includes courses on legal and political philosophy, modern legal philosophy, and global constitutionalism. He co-leads the Center for Global Constitutionalism at WZB and has authored numerous books and articles on constitutional theory, human rights, and EU law.
Labs/Teams: Core member of the WZB's Global Constitutionalism research group and the Cluster of Excellence 'Contestations of the Liberal Script' (SCRIPTS).
