About
Professor Mattias Calmunger leads the Division of Engineering Materials at Linköping University's Department of Management and Engineering (IEI). His research focuses on understanding material microstructure-performance relationships in high-temperature environments, particularly for steels used in biomass energy systems and industrial processes. He collaborates extensively with the steel industry to optimize material properties and resource utilization.
Education: Teknisk doktor (PhD) in Engineering Materials (2015), Docent (2019), and prior degrees from Linköping University.
Research interests include high-temperature mechanical behavior of metals, phase transformation mechanisms, and sustainable materials development. He has pioneered studies on corrosion-fatigue in completion strings and cooling processes for duplex stainless steels. His work supports industries through improved material selection and process optimization.
Notable contributions include establishing the LiU Composite Laboratory (2025) and fostering international collaborations, such as hosting Tunisian guest researchers. His team includes 27+ researchers across PhD students, postdocs, and faculty.
