Mattia Biffis is an Associate Professor at the University of Messina since 2024 and previously served as a postdoctoral fellow at the Norwegian Institute in Rome (2018–2021). His research focuses on early modern European art, emphasizing geographic and material aspects of artistic mobility, provenance studies, and cultural integration of migrant artists.
Education: Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Venice (2013), M.A. in Cultural and Intellectual History from the Warburg Institute (2007), and Laurea in Art History from the University of Venice (2006).
Research interests include 16th-century Venetian and 17th-century Bolognese art, cultural geography, exile studies, and material culture. His current project examines the physical circulation of art in early modern Europe.
Key publications explore topics like Guido Reni’s provenance, Tintoretto’s storytelling, and the role of art in Renaissance Venice. He has held grants from institutions such as the Francis Haskell Memorial Fund and the Dutch Institute for Art History.
