Prof. Matthis Synofzik serves as Head of the Research Division Translational Genomics of Neurodegenerative Diseases at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research and Senior Consultant in the Department of Neurodegenerative Diseases at University Hospital Tübingen, University of Tübingen.
His pioneering research establishes molecular precision medicine frameworks for neurodegenerative conditions including frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer's dementia, ataxias, and spasticity diseases. Key innovations span next-generation genomics profiling, ultrasensitive fluid protein biomarkers, and sensor-based digital-motor outcome capture via body-worn devices and smartphones enabling real-world remote monitoring. He spearheads the development of multimodal disease progression models integrating clinical, imaging, and biomarker trajectories.
Prof. Synofzik co-leads the European '1 Mutation 1 Medicine' platform implementing the continent's first n-of-1 antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) therapy, while building the world's largest ataxia NGS database (PREPARE GENESIS, >3000 datasets). His scalable patient-customized ASO platform represents a disruptive advance in treating ultrarare genetic neurological disorders.
