Matthijs Bogaards is a Professor of Political Science at the Central European University (CEU), previously holding a full professorship at Jacobs University Bremen. He holds a PhD from the European University Institute and MAs from Leiden University. His research focuses on democratization, de-democratization, consociationalism, power sharing, gender and illiberalism, and political parties in divided societies. He has contributed extensively to understanding electoral systems, ethnic conflict management, and gendered dimensions of democratic backsliding in post-communist Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.
