Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Wessling is Vice-Rector for Transfer at RWTH Aachen University and holds the Chair for Chemical Process Engineering. An Alexander von Humboldt Professor since 2010, he directs research on membrane systems and process intensification.
His research integrates selective mass transport with chemical conversion across micro-to-macro scales, developing advanced membrane systems for water treatment, energy storage, and carbon capture. Current innovations include electrochemical reactors and hybrid membrane processes.
Wessling received the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize (2019) and ERC Advanced Grant (2016) for transformative work in membrane science. As Editor of the Journal of Membrane Science, he shapes research dissemination in separation technologies.
