G.W.M. (Matthias) Rauterberg is a Full Professor emeritus at Eindhoven University of Technology's Industrial Design department and co-founder of the EAISI Health initiative. He has held visiting professorships at institutions in Japan and China and contributed to founding IFIP's Entertainment Computing Technical Committee. His research focuses on interactive systems addressing unconscious user layers, with expertise in entertainment computing, cognitive systems, and design science.
Education: BSc in Psychology (University of Marburg), two BSc degrees in Philosophy and Computer Science (University of Hamburg), MSc (summa cum laude) in Psychology and Computer Science (Hamburg), and a PhD from ETH Zurich. Joined TU/e as Full Professor in 1998 after senior research roles at ETH Zurich.
Research interests include designing interactive systems for cultural and unconscious user layers, leveraging empirical validation. Over 450 publications, editor of Entertainment Computing journal, and member of review boards for national/international research councils. Supervised 20+ PhD students (20% top-5% distinction).
Recent articles explore automated vehicle passenger comfort, motion sickness mitigation, human-robot interaction for dementia care, and cultural computing.
