Prof. Dr. Matthias Christen is a full-time Professor of Media Studies at the University of Bayreuth since 2011. He is affiliated with the Faculty of Languages and Literatures and has served in significant academic roles, including Vice Dean of the Faculty (2011-2016) and Moderator of the Master's program 'Media Culture and Media Economics' alongside Prof. Dr. Claas Christian Germelmann since 2015.

His research focuses on media studies, visual documentary forms, and media culture/economics. He has habilitated in Media Studies at Ruhr University Bochum (2009) and earned his doctorate in Modern German Literature and Film Studies (1997). He studied German literature, philosophy, and Greek philology at the Universities of Tübingen and Konstanz (1985-1991).
