Matthew Witt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biosciences at the University of Exeter, UK. As a marine scientist and conservation biologist, his research focuses on animal habitat-use, human-wildlife overlap, and the ecological impacts of marine renewable energy (wind and wave technology). His work employs satellite tracking, remote video, and acoustic systems, emphasizing spatial ecology and data visualization for marine management.
- Education: PhD in Biological Sciences (University of Exeter, 2007), MRes in Marine Biology (Plymouth, 2004), MSc in Oceanography (Southampton, 2003)
Research interests include:
- Marine renewable energy effects on migratory species (turtles, sharks, pelagic fish)
- Remote sensing and data visualization tools
- Climate change adaptation in marine ecosystems
- Human-wildlife conflict mitigation
Scientific awards include PRIMaRE, MERiFIC, and Darwin Fellowships. He chairs the Biosciences Research Ethics Committee (since 2024) and serves as Deputy Chair of the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (2018–2024).
