Matthew Vester is an Associate Chair and Professor of History at West Virginia University (WVU), affiliated with the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on Renaissance and early modern European history, particularly the political culture, kinship dynamics, and taxation systems of the Savoyard lands. He holds a Ph.D. from UCLA (1997), an M.A. from the University of Virginia (1992), and a B.S.F.S. from Georgetown University (1988).
His work emphasizes microhistorical analysis, exploring how individuals and families conceptualized rights, responsibilities, and identity. Current projects include a book on Isabelle de Challant and Giovanni Federico Madruzzo, examining gender and dynastic identity, and an English translation of Ludovico Antonio Muratori’s *Della pubblica felicità*. He collaborates with students on studies of Catholic laity, early modern noblewomen, and Paolo Sarpi’s historiography.
Vester’s publications span monographs, edited volumes, and articles in journals like *The Journal of Modern History* and *The Catholic Historical Review*. His research has received prestigious support, including a Villa I Tatti Fellowship (2006-2007) and the Chester Penn Higby Prize (2007). He has advised numerous graduate students and holds leadership roles in academic institutions such as the Deputazione Subalpina di Storia Patria and the Académie Saint-Anselme.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Western Civilization, the Renaissance, early modern France, and microhistory. His interdisciplinary approach bridges political, social, and cultural dimensions of early modern Europe, with a focus on the Alpine regions and transnational networks.
