About
Matthew Tanzy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Delaware State University, part of the Division of Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science. His research focuses on applied mathematics modelling, including combustion synthesis, population dynamics, and computational methods. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University (2013) and dual B.S. degrees in Applied Mathematics and Physics from Georgia Institute of Technology (2007).
Education:
- Ph.D./M.S. in Applied Mathematics, Northwestern University, 2013
- B.S. in Applied Mathematics & Physics (Highest Honors), Georgia Tech, 2007
Research Interests:
Dr. Tanzy specializes in numerical methods, reaction-diffusion equations, and asymptotic analysis. His work bridges theoretical models with practical applications in combustion engineering and population biology. Notable contributions include studies on nonlocal coupling in competing populations and wave structures in condensed-phase combustion systems.
Awards:
- Helmsley Charitable Trust Subgrant (2016)
- BioEXCEL Instructor Award (2012)
- Cabell Fellowship (2007-2008)
Teaching & Engagement:
He has taught at Delaware State since 2013 and previously instructed in NU's EXCEL/BioEXCEL programs. His pedagogical innovations include project-based learning approaches highlighted at Mercer County Community College (2017) and a national HBCU STEM education convening (2016).
Labs & Collaboration:
Engaged with interdisciplinary research groups, including the Applied Mathematics Research Center at DSU and collaborations with Northwestern University's combustion synthesis team.
