About
Matthew R. Libera is a Professor of Materials Science at the Stevens Institute of Technology, affiliated with the Schaefer School of Engineering and Science and the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. He directs the Laboratory for MultiScale Imaging (LMSI), a facility specializing in TEM, SEM, AFM, and confocal imaging of soft materials.
- Education:
- Sc.D., MIT (1987) - Materials Science (Minor: Physics)
- S.M., MIT (1983) - Materials Science
- B.S., Lafayette College (1981) - Metallurgical Engineering
His research spans polymeric biomaterials, hydrogels, and electron microscopy, focusing on infection-resistant biomaterials and microbial diagnostics. He has pioneered electron-beam lithography and electron energy-loss spectroscopy for soft-materials analysis.
Recent work explores microgel-tethered molecular beacons, self-defensive hydrogel coatings, and biofilm mechanics. His publications emphasize biomaterials-associated infection and nanoscale imaging techniques.
He has served as Associate Dean for Graduate Academics & Research (2013-2018) and held academic roles at IBM Research and MIT.
