About
Matthew R. Graham is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Eastern Connecticut State University. His research focuses on biogeography, desert biology, and arachnology, utilizing molecular genetics, morphology, and climate modeling to study biodiversity in arid landscapes, particularly arachnids. He collaborates with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and leads the Arachnology Lab.
Dr. Graham’s research has been supported by a four-year NSF grant to investigate the evolution and biogeography of desert camel spiders using genomics. His work explores how geological events like Miocene tectonics and Pleistocene climate shifts have shaped diversification patterns in arachnids such as rock scorpions, tarantulas, and camel spiders across the Mojave, Sonoran, and Great Basin deserts.
- Scientific Award: NSF grant for desert camel spider genomics research
His publications highlight phylogeographic trends driven by river avulsions, tectonic activity, and climate refugia, contributing to understanding evolutionary processes in extreme environments.
