Matthew Peter Miller is the Willis H. Carrier Professor in Engineering at Cornell University's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He holds affiliate appointments in Aerospace Engineering, Material Science and Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Professor Miller received his B.S. from Colorado School of Mines and M.S./Ph.D. from Georgia Tech, with professional experience including NFL football prior to his academic career.
His research focuses on developing tools for structural materials design through multiscale experiments and modeling. Key areas include crystal stress measurements, fatigue crack initiation, in-situ synchrotron x-ray experiments, and micromechanical behavior of alloys. As Director of the Insitμ center at CHESS, he advances capabilities in structural materials research with support from the Office of Naval Research.
Teaching includes undergraduate courses in engineering materials (M&AE212) and graduate courses in state variable plasticity models. He has received multiple teaching awards including the James and Mary Tien Excellence in Teaching Award and Dennis Shepherd Award.
