About
Dr. Matthew Neil Rasband is a Professor and the Vivian L. Smith Endowed Chair in Neuroscience at the Baylor College of Medicine. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern the assembly, maintenance, and dysfunction of axon initial segments (AIS) and nodes of Ranvier in neurons. These domains play critical roles in the initiation and propagation of electrical signals in the nervous system, and their disruption is implicated in diseases such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and neuropathic pain.
- Education: PhD in Biophysics from the University of Rochester; Postdoctoral training at SUNY Stony Brook
- Key Roles: Director of the Graduate Program in Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine
- Research Highlights: Investigation into neuron-glia interactions, molecular composition of axonal domains, and therapeutic strategies for nervous system repair
- Techniques: Proteomics, molecular biology, conditional knockout mice, electrophysiology, and proximity biotinylation
The Rasband Laboratory actively explores how injuries and diseases affect the structure and function of axonal domains, with a focus on developing strategies to preserve these structures. His work has significant implications for understanding and treating conditions like traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and ischemic brain injury.
Dr. Rasband collaborates with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, fostering an environment of innovative research. His lab has contributed to the understanding of the intrinsic specification of AIS and glial-dependent node of Ranvier formation.
- Scientific Awards: Vivian L. Smith Endowed Chair in Neuroscience
