Matthew Mosca is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Washington. His research focuses on Chinese and Inner Asian history, particularly the Qing empire (1644-1912), its foreign relations, and global historical contexts. He specializes in the intellectual history of Qing-era geography and historiography, with a current emphasis on Eurasian historiography of Chinggis Khan and the Mongol Empire (1650-1900).
Education: Ph.D. in History and East Asian Languages from Harvard University (2008).
Teaching includes courses such as China and the West in Historical Perspective (1500-1976), Historical Lives Between the United States and China, and Chinese History from 1276-1895. He is currently not accepting new MA/PhD students for the 2025-2026 academic year.
