Matthew Katz is an Associate Professor and Associate Department Chair in Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts. His academic roles include serving as Dean's Research Faculty Fellow. He holds a PhD in Sport Management from the University of Texas at Austin (2014), alongside multiple advanced degrees in Sport Management and History from Louisiana State University and a BA from Muhlenberg College.
His research focuses on sport consumer behavior, marketing, and analytics, with emphasis on fan networks, identity dynamics, and community empowerment. Notable projects include analyses of women’s sport fan engagement, health-conscious spectator behavior, and retention strategies for sport officials. He has also explored historical aspects of sport through studies like the innovation of military bowl games and the formation of NCAA Division III athletics.
Recipient of the 2018 North American Society for Sport Management Research Fellowship and Isenberg’s Teaching Excellence Award (2019), his work bridges empirical research with practical applications in sport management. His publications span journals such as Sport Marketing Quarterly and Journal of Sport Management, with a focus on network theory and behavioral analysis.
