About
Matthew Jackson is a Professor and Chair in Geological Fluid Dynamics at Imperial College London's Department of Earth Science & Engineering, part of the Faculty of Engineering. He leads the NORMS Group (Novel Reservoir Monitoring, Modelling, and Simulation) and the NORMS Laboratory for Reservoir Physics. His research focuses on geothermal energy, subsurface fluid dynamics, and reservoir characterization.
Education: BSc in Physics (Imperial College, 1990–1993), PhD in Earth Sciences (University of Liverpool, 1993–1997). Professional experience includes roles as Research Associate (1997–2002), Lecturer (2002–2006), Senior Lecturer (2006–2011), and Chair (2011–present).
Research interests span geology, resources engineering, geophysics, and geochemistry, with emphasis on subsurface energy storage, CO2 sequestration, and geothermal systems. Recent work explores sedimentological heterogeneity impacts on reservoir performance and rapid prototyping of geological models using flow diagnostics.
Articles highlight advancements in numerical modelling for geothermal systems, CO2 storage mechanisms, and aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) optimization. Collaborative projects include the FindHeat initiative and the Endurance CO2 storage site analysis.
Labs/Teams: NORMS Group and NORMS Laboratory, focusing on reservoir physics and energy storage solutions.
