About
Matthew J. Roberts is an Associate Professor at The University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research (UQCCR) and a Clinician Research Fellow at Metro North Hospital and Health Service. He concurrently serves as a Consultant Urologist and Robotic Surgeon at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS), Queensland Health. His academic role includes leadership as a Group Leader at UQCCR, focusing on translational research in urologic malignancies.
Dr. Roberts completed his medical degree at The University of Queensland, followed by urology specialty training in Queensland and New South Wales. He earned his PhD from The University of Queensland under Professor 'Frank' Gardiner, investigating novel biomarkers for prostate cancer detection.
His research program centers on urologic oncology with three primary domains:
- Diagnostic innovation: Advanced imaging (PSMA-PET/MRI fusion) and biomarker development for prostate cancer
- Therapeutic optimization: Clinical trials in urologic surgery, radioligand therapies, and AI-enhanced treatment decision-making
- Health systems: Cost-effectiveness analyses of diagnostic pathways and implementation of precision medicine approaches
Recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate a consistent focus on prostate cancer management innovations, with 85% of articles addressing: PSMA-PET diagnostic applications, surgical technique optimization, AI/imaging fusion technologies, and health economic analyses of urologic care pathways. This corpus reflects a translational research approach bridging molecular diagnostics to clinical implementation.
Dr. Roberts contributes to several international scientific committees including the EAU Prostate Cancer Guidelines Committee, BJU International Editorial Board, and ANZUP 2024 ASM Co-Convenorship. He leads a research group at UQCCR investigating extracellular vesicle biomarkers and PSMA-targeted therapies.
