Matthew Hurley

Matthew Hurley is a Senior Lecturer in Politics & International Relations at Sheffield Hallam University, affiliated with the Sheffield Institute of Social Sciences and the College of Social Sciences and Arts. His research focuses on gender, war, security, and NATO's institutional policies, particularly the integration of gender into military structures. He co-authored the award-winning book NATO, Gender & the Military: Women Organising from Within, recognized with an honourable mention in the 2020 British International Studies Association Susan Strange Book Prize. His work bridges critical feminist theory and military studies, analyzing NATO's historical and contemporary engagement with gender issues. Hurley teaches modules including International Relations in Theory & Practice, Sex, Gender & World Politics, and Contemporary War & Security Studies.

His current research explores LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion within NATO, emphasizing queer perspectives in military institutions. He has contributed to NATO bodies such as the NATO Committee on Gender Perspectives and published in journals like Critical Military Studies and Millennium: Journal of International Studies. Hurley supervises PhD students in gender, war, and security, including Lewis Eves' project on Sino-Japanese security dynamics.
