Dr. Matthew Hunt is a Lecturer in Sociolinguistics at the University of Southampton. His research focuses on sociolinguistic perception and socio-semantics, employing experimental methods to explore how linguistic features influence social evaluations. He leads projects examining linguistic variation in domestic abuse testimony and professional football commentary. Current affiliations include membership in the Centre for Linguistics, Language Education and Acquisition Research. His work bridges semantics, pragmatics, and sociolinguistics to analyze 'meaning' across contexts.
Research interests include variation perception, epistemic phrases, and taboo language interaction. He supervises PhD candidates in Applied Linguistics/ELT and is accepting new PhD applications.
