Dr. Matthew Holt is an Associate Professor and Applied Cybernetics Lead at the School of Cybernetics, Australian National University, within the College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics. With 30 years of experience in tertiary education leadership and over a decade in higher education business development, his career spans cybernetics, design research, systems thinking, and artificial intelligence.

His research focuses on the history and theory of cybernetics, design, systems thinking, and AI. He is developing short courses on cybernetic approaches to complex systems and emergent technologies, including AI. His publications explore intersections of design, semiotics, political economy, and aesthetics.
The Cybernetic systems pre-histories project (2023) investigates historical foundations of cybernetics to inform future robotics and AI-enabled systems. Collaborators include Dr. Karen Daniell, Dr. Genevieve Bell, and others.
