Matthew Holman

Matthew Holman is a Research Fellow at The Courtauld Institute of Art's Centre for the Art of the Americas (2022-23), specializing in modern and contemporary American literature and visual arts with a focus on transnational cultural exchange, avant-garde movements, and intersections between political organization and artistic form. He leads events on North American art, including symposia on lyrical abstraction and Alice Neel.

His research explores connections between Cold War art and literary cosmopolitanism, as evidenced in his forthcoming book Curating Modern Life: Frank O’Hara and Cold War Art. His recent publications address political crises in American lyric poetry and pandemic-era cultural responses.

Matthew contributes to international art and literary publications and collaborates with galleries such as Kasmin and Gagosian. His upcoming project at the Paul Mellon Centre will investigate Whitechapel Gallery's radical education programs (1979-1989).
