About
Matthew Hemm is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University's Fisher College of Science and Mathematics. His research laboratory focuses on identifying and characterizing small proteins (≤50 amino acids) in Escherichia coli, with particular emphasis on transmembrane small proteins and their physiological functions. Current work investigates how small protein abundance and function vary under different environmental conditions.
His research interests span molecular biology, microbiology, protein biochemistry, bacterial genetics, and membrane proteins. Hemm's investigations contribute to foundational knowledge applicable to both bacterial systems and eukaryotic organisms.
Hemm's recent publications demonstrate a focus on innovative educational approaches in STEM, protein characterization methodologies, and bacterial genomics. His work integrates computational biology with experimental validation across microbiology and biochemistry domains.
He teaches BIOL 409 Molecular Biology and BIOL 410 Molecular Biology Lab during spring semesters.
