About
Dr. Matthew Haigh serves as Associate Professor in Psychology at Northumbria University, specializing in Experimental Pragmatics. His research examines how people generate pragmatic inferences during language comprehension, reasoning, and conversation. Funded by The Leverhulme Trust and Experimental Psychology Society, he teaches undergraduate modules in data management and experimental methodology.
Research explores cognitive mechanisms underlying language interpretation, with focus areas including generic language processing, probability judgment biases, and context-dependent comprehension of indirect communication. Publications demonstrate methodological rigor through eye-tracking studies and multi-site replications.
Recent work investigates how scientific language in media influences public perception of research consensus. As Chartered Psychologist and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he contributes to advancing psychological methodology and pedagogy.
