Matthew Gudgeon is an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department at Tufts University, a Research Affiliate at IZA, and a Faculty Research Fellow at NBER. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Boston University (2018), an M.A. from Boston University (2015), and a B.A. from Georgetown University (2008). Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and worked in the Army’s Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis.
His research focuses on labor economics, public policy, and political economy, with a particular emphasis on military service outcomes, tax policy impacts, conflict dynamics, and policing. He uses applied econometric methods to evaluate policies related to labor markets, taxation, and social programs. Notable work includes analyzing the returns to military service, the intergenerational transmission of military careers, and the interaction between unemployment insurance and retirement policies.
Matthew’s recent studies explore how combat deployments affect veterans’ health and social outcomes, the role of leadership diversity in police performance, and the prediction of conflict in regions like Colombia and Indonesia. His interdisciplinary approach bridges economics, political science, and public policy to address real-world challenges.
