About
M.R. (Matthew) Groves is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Biology department within the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy. He holds an academic position in Structural Biology and serves as Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Protyon BV. His research focuses on structure-based drug design for human diseases, structural investigation of malarial pathways (including carbon metabolism and vitamin biosynthesis in Plasmodium falciparum), and method development in crystallography and biological imaging.
Matthew Groves earned a 2:1 Honours Degree in Physics from Worcester College, Oxford University (1990–1993), followed by a Ph.D. in Structural Biology from Birkbeck College, University of London (1993–1996). He has held postdoctoral positions at the University of Oxford and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Germany before joining the University of Groningen as an Assistant Professor in 2013, later promoted to Associate Professor.
His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing infectious diseases. Key research outputs include structural studies of enzymes critical to malaria and tuberculosis, drug design targeting metabolic pathways, and advancements in cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography methods. Recent publications highlight inhibitor design for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and antimalarial drug targets like aspartate transcarbamoylase.
Groves teaches courses such as 'Medicinal Chemistry and Spectroscopy' and contributes to the Medical and Pharmaceutical Drug Innovation Master’s program. He leads projects integrating high-throughput screening and structural biology for drug discovery, emphasizing translational research and industry collaboration through Protyon BV.
