Matthew G. Springer

Matthew G. Springer is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Data Science and Society at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He concurrently serves as Managing Partner at Basis Policy Research. Previously, he held the Robena and Walter E. Hussman Jr. Distinguished Professorship at UNC (2018–2024) and was a Professor of Public Policy and Education at Vanderbilt University (2006–2018). His expertise focuses on leveraging large-scale data systems to improve educational opportunities and policy outcomes through cross-sector collaboration.

Springer has over 20 years of experience leading research projects for governments and international organizations, including the U.S. Department of Education, OECD, and governments of Brazil and the UK. His work emphasizes translating data into actionable insights for policymakers and practitioners. He is regularly featured in major media outlets such as the New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

He serves on the board of directors for the Society for Research on Educational Effectiveness and editorial boards of leading journals like the American Educational Research Journal.
