Dr Matthew Fayers is a Reader in Pure Mathematics and Deputy Head of School at Queen Mary University of London's School of Mathematical Sciences. He holds a PhD and MA from the University of Cambridge and has been at QMUL since 2004. His research focuses on representation theory of symmetric groups, Hecke algebras, quantum Lie theory, and combinatorics of integer partitions. He has held a Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 Fellowship and led roles including Chair of the Undergraduate Exam Board and Head of the Algebra and Number Theory group.
Education: PhD and MA from University of Cambridge.
Research Interests: Algebra, combinatorics, representation theory of symmetric groups in prime characteristic, Hecke algebras, quantum algebra, and integer partitions. His work includes studying irreducible representations modulo primes and crystal bases in quantum algebras.
Grants: EPSRC grant (2022–2022) for 'Irreducible modular representations'.
Students: Supervised PhD candidates including Matt Spencer (2013), Liron Speyer (2015), and others. Current students include Dean Yates and Lorenzo Putignano.
Labs/Teams: Member of the Centre for Combinatorics, Algebra and Number Theory, contributing to research on representation theory and combinatorial algebra.
