About
Matthew Doyle is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Medical Sciences, University of Sydney. He leads the Bacterial Outer Membrane Biogenesis Laboratory and is the Research Program Lead for the Sydney Anti-bacterial Accelerator (SABA). He is affiliated with the Sydney Infectious Diseases Institute and the Centre for Drug Discovery Innovation. His research focuses on understanding bacterial outer membrane protein biogenesis, particularly the role of Omp85-superfamily proteins like BamA, and developing novel antibiotics targeting these pathways.
Dr. Doyle holds a PhD in Infectious Diseases from the University of Adelaide (2012-2015) and has conducted NIH-funded research in the USA (2016-2022). His work combines bacteriology, biochemistry, structural biology, and drug discovery methodologies.
- Education:
- PhD, Research Centre for Infectious Diseases, University of Adelaide (2012-2015)
- BSc (Biotechnology) with majors in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology, University of Adelaide (2009-2011)
- NIH Visiting Fellowships (2016-2022)
- NIH Research Fellow (2021-2022)
His research investigates OMP folding mechanisms, energy sources for membrane protein assembly, and antibiotic development targeting BamA. Recent studies explore hybrid-barrel folding intermediates and dynamic protein structures in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. His team also develops two-partner secretion system inhibitors and investigates membrane tensile forces in protein folding.
